Stagnant Era rose from the ashes of local bands Warhead and Backlash in 1982 with former members Mick (drums) and Trunk/Monkey/The Runkster (guitar) teaming up with local moustachioed punk Butch (bass,vocals) to form the initial line up. With fellow local band Seizure splitting due to the drummers departure to Major Accident, guitarist Johny was drafted in to give a meatier sound whilst an extensive search was launched to find a singer to enable Butch to concentrate on his bass duties. Dayve looked the part and conveniently lived with Johny and Butch,but at the tender age of 16 his vocal attributes were a tad ‘squeaky’ to complement the SE onslaught, so Butch stuck with the singing whilst Dayve did the fanzine, monitored Trunk’s diet, and made sure that people got up to dance whenever SE were playing. Despite the band splitting almost every Friday night, they played dozens of gigs and supported most of the ‘top’ bands of the time. They played alongside the Xpozez on many occasions as well as the Instigators and the other Peaceville bands as well as playing at several ‘squat gigs’. Last gig was supporting Black Flag in Leeds if memory serves (’85). Two tracks were included to the Dandelions, Fur Coats & Rainbows compilation tape, which was made by a couple of lads from Guisborough (Andy & Mike) to help fund the Girls In Need refuge that Chumbawamba were trying to set up.
